This week we took inspiration from the drawings of Alice Neel, an artist now recognised as one of the most important American portrait artists of the 20th century. Her striking portraits with their psychological intensity are instantly recognisable. She spent the latter part of her working life, living in Spanish Harlem and painting the friends and neighbours around her. If anyone would like to learn more about Alice's life and work, there is a wonderful film directed by her grandson Andrew Neel exploring the struggles she faced as a woman artist, a single mother, and a painter who defied convention. She is represented in the Uk by the Victoria Miro gallery. All the lovely drawings from the class, are in the post proceeding this!
