This week, for inspiration with our poses, we looked to the Ramayana, an ancient Sanskrit epic which follows Prince Rama's quest to rescue his beloved wife Sita from the clutches of Ravana with the help of an army of monkeys. It is traditionally attributed to the authorship of the sage Valmiki and dated to around 500 BCE to 100 BCE.
We looked at the manuscripts commissioned in India in the 17th Century, shown in a large exhibition at the British Library in 2008. An ancient narrative method of simultaneous narration was used and each image shows several episodes from the story within the single picture frame.
Our Model Santosh, who is from South India, wore traditional costume for the final long pose. During the short poses, at the beginning of the session. he wore a warriors garb, while we drew lots of quick action poses.
